Ten-Minute Tune-Ups

If you can’t find the time for a long workout in your hectic schedule, Rebecca Johnson and Bill Tulin have the answer. They co-authored Travel Fitness, designed to help busy business travelers keep fit while on the go. “New studies show that a regular, moderate amount of activity, spread throughout the course of a day, will keep you healthy Even a 10-minute walk twice a day can get you on the road to feeling better,” says Tulin.

The key to getting in shape when you’re on a very tight schedule is flexibility. “Find hidden opportunities throughout your day to squeeze in a few exercises or stretches. Choose to be active whenever you can, and recognize that every bit of activity counts.”

  • Walk whenever possible. Take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator. Walk briskly to office meetings or when performing errands. Instead of parking your car right in front of your destination, park two or three blocks away and walk.
  • Try to accumulate 10 minutes or more of stretching per day “Seize opportunities to stretch while watching TV, riding alone in an elevator, or waiting in line:’
  • Think of your living room as your gym. You don’t need expensive club memberships or fancy equipment to get a complete workout.
