Insure Your Personal Car Used Part-time in Your Personal Business as a Company Car
If you insure a car used part-time in your business as a company car instead of a personal car, your premiums can as much as double. The question then becomes: “If I buy a personal policy on my car, have an accident, and then the company discovers that I use the car part-time in my business, will it pay?” The answer is yes, and your insurance company normally won’t cancel your policy for that reason. It may require you in the future to insure your car as a business car; that is, if it doesn’t drop you for just having the accident.
Many insurance agents will tell you that it is O.K. with their insurance company for you to insure your car as a personal vehicle if all you do is use it occasionally for your small business. This approach, however, would not apply if the vehicle is a truck or van that is primarily a business vehicle or if your personal car is regularly driven by an employee other than you or your spouse. If you have any doubts or concerns, call your auto insurance agent. If you don’t like the answers, check around for other companies that may treat the use of a personal car in business more favorably.
